Top 10 Worst Home Insurance Companies in 2024 Based on Complaints

β€œThinking about switching insurance companies? You might want to avoid these ones. Today, I’m revealing the 10 worst home insurance companies based on complaint data, and some of these names may surprise you. And this is real data from the Department of Insurance, not just opinions.”

Hi everyone and today we are talking about companies with the highest frequency of complaints for 2024. This report is specifically for home insurance claim complaints.

Where This Data Comes From

So, let’s talk about where this information comes from… this list comes straight from the Department of Insurance, so it is real data, real complaints, and real insight. The Department of Insurance investigates the complaints, so this is not just β€œGoogle review” type information. Also, they calculate something called the Complaint Index, which shows how a company’s complaints compare to their market share.

So, a Complaint Index of 1.0 is average. Below 1.0 is better than average. But anything above? That’s a sign there may be issues. Let’s count them down.

Top 10 Worst Companies – Countdown Style

#10 – American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida (Complaint Index: 4.10)

American Bankers Insurance of Florida, with over 21 complaints on less than half a percent of the market. That’s not good.

#9 – Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Company (Index: 4.12)

Liberty Mutual comes in at number nine, and this is one of several Liberty Mutual entities on this list.

#8 – Allstate Indemnity Company (Index: 4.93)

Yes, that is Allstate at number 8. With a complaint ratio of 1.11, customers are clearly frustrated and don’t feel they are in β€œgood hands.”

#7 – Liberty Mutual Insurance Company (Index: 5.57)

And at number seven, yes, this is another Liberty company with a high number of complaints compared to their size. Liberty Mutual has multiple companies underwriting home insurance, and they are showing up on this list way too often.

#6 – Liberty Insurance Corporation (Index: 5.75)

At number 6… we have Liberty Mutual again. They’re really making a name for themselves on this list.

#5 – Spinnaker Insurance Company (Index: 6.50)

At number 5, we have Spinnaker Insurance. With a small market share, this means there is a serious imbalance in claim satisfaction.

#4 – American Family Connect Property & Casualty (Index: 27.03)

Oh, things are getting bad here at number 4, as American Family has nearly five times the complaints you’d expect based on their size.

#3 – General Security National Insurance (Index: 31.05)

General Security National comes in at number 3. They are a smaller company with big complaint volume.

#2 – Country Mutual Insurance Company (Index: 42.45)

The runner-up on the bad list, Country Mutual, has only 1% of the market but doesn’t treat their claims well. That’s definitely concerning.

#1 – Esurance Insurance Company (Index: 215.11)

And at Number 1, with over 200 times the market average, we have Esurance. Whether it’s pricing, claims, or coverage, something is clearly going wrong here.
