I grew up in southwestern Wisconsin, left the state for college, and returned to raise five children (and many years of organic gardens). I could tell story after story about the horses devouring the strawberry patch, raccoons eating our chickens, our cows getting out, the neighbors’ cows getting out, and the list goes on. Because I homeschooled all of my kids as a stay-at-home mom, I was able to also invest time in preserving food from our garden and teach them to do the same.
Even though my children are grown now, my husband and I still grow most of our food and raise our own beef cows and chickens. It’s a lot of work, and we love the lifestyle.
